Finding out you're pregnant can bring many different emotions. For some women, it's exciting news. For others, it may feel overwhelming, frightening or uncertain.
When a pregnancy is unexpected, you may find yourself facing questions you never imagined having to answer.
What are my options? How will this affect my future? What will my partner think? Who can I talk to without being judged?
At Zoe’s Place, we believe every woman deserves access to accurate, unbiased information and a safe space to explore her circumstances without pressure, judgement or expectations.
What Does Unbiased Pregnancy Counselling Mean?
Unbiased pregnancy counselling means providing information about all available pregnancy options without trying to influence your decision.
These options include:
Continuing your pregnancy and parenting.
Continuing your pregnancy and exploring adoption.
Ending your pregnancy through abortion.
Our role is not to tell you what you should do. It is to listen, answer questions within our scope, provide information and help you access appropriate services.
We recognise that every woman's circumstances, beliefs, relationships and support networks are different.
Your decision should reflect your own values, circumstances and wishes — not someone else's expectations.
What Is Pregnancy Coercion?
Pregnancy coercion occurs when another person uses pressure, threats, manipulation or controlling behaviour to influence someone's pregnancy decisions.
This may involve pressuring a woman to become pregnant, continue a pregnancy or have an abortion against her wishes.
Coercion can sometimes be difficult to recognise, particularly when it comes from someone you love or trust.
Examples may include:
A partner threatening to leave unless you have an abortion.
Family members pressuring you to continue or to end a pregnancy against your wishes.
Someone threatening to withdraw financial or emotional support unless you make the decision they want.
A partner interfering with contraception or attempting to control whether you become pregnant.
Someone preventing you from accessing medical appointments, counselling or accurate information.
Feeling frightened about what another person might do if you make a different decision.
Coercion isn't always obvious. It may involve repeated pressure, guilt, intimidation or threats that leave you feeling you have no real choice.
No woman should feel forced into a pregnancy decision.
What If You're Feeling Pressured?
If you're feeling pressured, confused or frightened about your pregnancy, having someone independent to talk to can make a difference.
You deserve the opportunity to explore your options privately, ask questions and consider what matters to you.
At Zoe’s Place, we can help you:
Talk openly about your pregnancy and how you're feeling.
Explore your options without judgement or pressure.
Recognise controlling or coercive behaviour.
Consider your personal safety and available support networks.
Access appropriate healthcare, domestic violence services and other community supports.
You don't need to have all the answers before reaching out.
